Natalia Palacios oversees harvest of CIMMYT maize lines enriched with vitamin A

Natalia Palacios, CIMMYT maize nutrition quality specialist, oversees the harvest of maize lines bred to have a high content of provitamin A, on an experimental plot at CIMMYT’s headquarters at El Batán, Mexico. Palacios works on breeding maize rich in beta-carotene, a provitamin that is converted to vitamin A within the human body. This maize therefore has the potential to ameliorate the problem of vitamin A deficiency in people who rely heavily on maize in their diet.
Maize is the staple food for more than one billion people in sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America, but it is low in provitamin A. Vitamin A deficiency is a particular danger for very poor families who are unable to eat a diverse diet. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that night blindness and other health problems caused by vitamin A deficiency, which weakens vision and immune systems, affect more than 5 million children and nearly 10 million pregnant women worldwide.
CIMMYT’s efforts form part of HarvestPlus, a CGIAR challenge program that uses biofortification to improve the nutritional value of staple foods. As part of an ongoing breeding program, scientists in CIMMYT and other organizations are now at work to produce a new generation of varieties with more provitamin A than ever before. Alleles that can boost beta-carotene levels in grain, rare and previously found only in temperate maize, are being bred into tropical maize for developing countries.
